What is Pupil Premium?

The Pupil Premium is an allocation of money that is given to schools to specifically assist children from low income families. Schools receive the Pupil Premium funding to help pupils who  are currently eligible for free school meals (FSM), those who have been eligible within the last six years for FSM, looked after children (LAC) and children who have parents serving in the Armed Forces (SC).

The aim of the Pupil Premium funding is to reduce the gap in attainment between Pupil Premium students and non-Pupil Premium students. School have the autonomy to spend the funds as they see fit, whilst being fully accountable to both governors and the Government. Schools are required to publish information on their websites on how the Pupil Premium funding is spent and the impact of the funding.

At Testbourne Community School, a member of the Senior Leadership Team has the responsibility for leading and monitoring strategies to reduce the gap in attainment for Pupil Premium Students. Improving the outcomes for Pupil Premium students will be a key focus for the whole school.

The strategies which we choose to implement are informed by the latest educational research. Sources include the Department for Education, Ofsted, Education Endowment Foundation and the Sutton Trust. Overall, the research indicates that the most effective strategies for reducing the gap in attainment between disadvantaged and other pupils include;

  • Highly effective teaching
  • Acting on constructive feedback
  • Small group tuition and peer tutoring
  • Regular, good quality homework
  • Behaviour support and intervention
  • Transition support

We are planning to employ a wide range of strategies to help us improve performance within the identified groups and these include recommendations from published sources e.g. Teaching and Learning Toolkit by the Education Endowment Foundation, Pupil Premium Reports by the Sutton Trust and publications from Ofsted.

Strategies used at Testbourne include;

  • Over staffing and reduction of class sizes in core subjects
  • Access to after-school extra-curricular activities
  • Support for compulsory educational visits
  • One to one or small group tuition in English and Maths
  • Access to our school counsellor, student support and pastoral team
  • Priority access to our careers advisor
  • Homework clubs
  • Holiday revision sessions during February half term, Easter and May half term
  • Parent information evenings, study skills and curriculum evenings
  • Literacy and numeracy support
  • Attendance rewards and support
  • Assessment and feedback stickers
  • Alternative curriculum/ outreach support
  • Provision of online learning resources and apps

What are our aims for using Pupil Premium?

The Pupil Premium will be used to provide additional educational support to improve the progress and to raise the attainment for eligible pupils. The funding will be used to narrow and close the gap between the achievement of these pupils and their peers both locally and nationally.

Alternative provision
  • When appropriate to the needs of the individual, support from alternative provision allows highly specialized intervention to take place. This is for a fixed period and allows students to tackle issues before returning to school.

The purpose of the curriculum is to enable students to:

Home Learning:

Home learning tasks should support progress of all students through, for example: challenging preparation work for lessons; independent research; consolidation of learning; improving work following informative feedback (written or verbal).   • All students can access a rich extra-curricular programme that, together with the curriculum, promotes healthy, spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development, thereby preparing students for the opportunities and responsibilities of adult life.
